The Leeds Arts Council will honor Mary Jean Henke, a watercolor artist from Birmingham, as Artist of the Month for July. The LAC will host a reception for Henke at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday at the Leeds Theater and Arts Center on Parkway Drive.

Normally, the artist reception takes place on the first Sunday of each month; however, as July 4 falls on a Sunday this year, the date has been changed to June 27.

Henke is mainly a self-taught artist who studies independently. One of the owners and founders of Artist Incorporated, she typically shows her work only in her Birmingham gallery. She has been juried into many prestigious shows and exhibitions, and won numerous top awards.

An acrylic and mixed-media painter, Henke usually paints on gallery wrap canvases. Her work is primarily nonrepresentational or abstract impressionism. She uses various media and other materials to gain depth and texture in her paintings.

The gallery is open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and during LAC events. For more information call 205-699-1892, or visit www.leedsartscouncil.org.
