To the Editor: The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is the latest example of how “help” from environmentalists makes things worse.

Days after taking office, President Barack Obama signed a law forbidding American oil companies from drilling in the Gulf, leaving it open to foreign companies like BP with their poor safety record. Not to mention, BP was one of his largest campaign contributors during his race for the presidency.

Because of pressure from environmentalists American oil companies cannot drill on land along the Gulf coast or in its shallow waters near shore. Had this been allowed, we would not have an oil leak a mile under the surface and 85 miles out in the Gulf. An oil leak on land or in shallow water is hundreds of times easier to repair, and less time consuming.

So thank a liberal and the president for helping to exacerbate a job that would be much easier under the control of those who do it for a living every day.
