Leeds comes up short at regional

The Leeds Green Wave's defense of the AHSAA 3A championship came to an end Saturday in a 56-40 loss to Piedmont in the Northeast Regional finals in Jacksonville.

Leeds (17-10) trailed by double digits at halftime, but was as close as 6 in the fourth quarter. However, Piedmont (23-8) closed the game on a 17-7 run to secure the victory.

Mark Buckner and Deandric Thomas led the way for the Green Wave offense, finishing with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Josh Abercrombie added 7.

With the region championship in hand, Piedmont will face Greene County in the state semifinals on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Birmingham.
