The Ashville Lady Bulldogs are living proof that basketball is definitely a team sport.

During the Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament, it was Coach Dale Beason’s “Second Five” that provided the spark needed to post wins over Oneonta and Locust Fork to win the area crow.

With the two wins, Ashville improved to 27-2 overall and is set to host a sub-regional game tonight against Saks, who lost to Anniston Monday in the area tournament finals. The Lady Wildcats enter the contest tonight with a record of 18-10. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Locust Fork 61, SCCHS 31

The season came to a close for the St. Clair County Lady Saints last week as they lost to Locust Fork 61-31 in the tournament that was played at Ashville.

The Lady Hornets opened up a 10-2 lead early on and SCCHS trailed 15-6 after the first quarter.

By halftime, the Lady Saints trailed 32-13.

The second half was much like the first half as Locust Fork outscored St. Clair 29-18 to make the final score 61-31.

Leading the Lady Saints was Kreshala Mickens with 16 points. Diamond Buckhanon pumped in 6 points while Tabby Oakes scored 5 points. Teara Williams and Taylor Lomax had 2 points each.

Ashville 68, Oneonta 40

Trailing 7-4 with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter, Beason put in his “Second Five” and the momentum changed.

Over the next 5:57, the second group of players for Ashville led the Lady Bulldogs on a 20-6 run to give Ashville a 24-13 lead — a lead they would not give up.

By halftime, Ashville led 33-16.

Headed into the fourth quarter, Ashville’s lead was 55-31 and they went onto win with ease 68-40.

Jacie Tipton led Ashville with 15 points. Destiny Montgomery was close behind with 13 points while Stormy Penland added 10 points. Bianca Bothwell and Kim Fuller contributed 8 points each while Ebonie Brooks chipped in 4 points. Taylor Coffee, Lori Stephenson, Kristen O’Barr, Courtney Elders and Lakevia Looney had 2 points each.

Ashville 45, Locust Fork 40

Again, the Lady Bulldogs got off to a slow start as they missed their first four shots and were only 1-for-10 from the field, falling behind 12-2 with 2:42 left in the first quarter.

Beason called timeout and then a few moments later, brought in his “Second Five” and again it was the spark that lit the fire.

Montgomery hit back-to-back 3-pointers with under 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter to make it 12-10 after one quarter of play. Ashville ended the quarter on an 8-0 run.

Locust Fork opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to open up an 18-10 lead. But Ashville finished the quarter strong outscoring the Lady Hornets 13-4. Tipton hit a trey, and then Elders hit a short jumper. Fuller made a lay-up with one minute left before halftime and a shot by Elders with 30 seconds left in the first half gave Ashville’s its first lead at 23-22.

The Lady Hornets outscored Ashville 12-8 in the third frame to take a 3-point, 34-31 lead into the fourth quarter. But the Lady Bulldogs owned the fourth quarter and got a crucial trey from Tipton late in the game as Ashville outscored Locust Fork 14-6 and won the game 45-40.

Tipton finished the contest with 15 points. Fuller added 10 while Montgomery finished with 6 points, the back-to-back treys late in the first quarter. Elders added 4 points while Bothwell and Penland finished with 3 points each. O’Barr and Brooks had 2 points each.

Jacie Tipton, Kim Fuller and Destiny Montgomery made the All-Tournament Team for Ashville.
