Nobles, who has served as fire chief twice previously — from 1983-1992 and from 1999-2002 — is already serving the city as fire marshal. Per the recommendation of mayor Joe Lee, councilman Lynn Taylor moved to appoint him as chief in the interim, with the understanding that he will not relinquish his role as marshal and will continue to serve as marshal once the city hires a permanent chief.
“Joe’s a great asset to the fire department,” Taylor said. “He’s been here for as long as I can remember.
“I started with the fire department in 1975, and Joe was here. So that’s been a long time.”
Nobles fills the vacancy left by the resignation of James Robinson, who resigned his appointment two weeks ago.
“Welcome aboard again, Joe,” Lee said after the motion was approved.
Nobles told the council he is “glad to be back.”
