The body of a U.S. Air Force officer missing in Haiti was recovered Sunday.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ken Bourland, 37, of Florida was missing since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti Jan. 12.

According to a statement released by Bourland’s widow, Peggy, he sent an e-mail from his second-floor hotel room at the Hotel Montana to his wife and three sons moments before the earthquake. Bourland arrived in Haiti the day of the earthquake as part of an Air Force team that prepares countries for disaster relief assistance.

Adrienne and Dennis Bourland, Ken Bourland’s parents, of Cook Springs, Peggy Bourland, and her three sons were traveling to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Monday to meet the flight returning Bourland’s body.

Friends of the family said funeral arrangements are pending, but Bourland is expected to be buried at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
