The state-of-the-art facility is a new concept in nursing home care. It will be like a village nestled on the 27 acres across from the new St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital.
Ground was broken on the new hospital this past week, and the Veterans Home is expected to follow in 2011.
The architectural design is ready for the complex, which features 254 private rooms — 174 skilled nursing and 80 assisted living residences. Just like a small town, it will have a town center complete with beauty and barber shop, coffee shop, chapel and main dining. It also will have a Hall of Honor, an area dedicated to honoring men and women who have served their country.
It is encouraging to hear the reassurances from Veterans Administration officials that the project is still moving ahead.
The commitment is there. Partial funding is there. They are simply waiting for the balance of funds to get started.
When ground is broken, it will be another historic day for the property lying just north of Interstate 20 and the community that surrounds it. And we hope the project gets under way as soon as possible.
