The Ashville Lady Bulldogs tasted defeat for the first time this season in the opening round of the Etowah Christmas Tournament last week. Ashville lost to Class 5A Boaz 64-47 but fought back in the next two games of the tournament to beat Albertville and Alexandria. The Lady Bulldogs are now 15-1 on the season.

Boaz 64, Ashville 47

Ashville came up on the short end of the scoreboard, something new for them this season.

They lost to Boaz 64-47.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed throughout the game as they were down 20-11 after the first quarter and 31-26 at halftime.

By the end of the third quarter, Ashville trailed 47-37. The final score was 64-47.

Leading Ashville was Bianca Bothwell with 14 points. Destiny Montgomery pumped in 11 points while Ebonie Brooks scored 10 points. Kim Fuller netted 6 points while Jenny Howard had 2 points. Courtney Elders, Stormy Penland, Jacie Tipton and Kristen O’Barr all had 1 point each.

Ashville coach Dale Beason said he thought the girls learned some lessons in the loss against Boaz.

“We shot the ball poor against Boaz,” Beason said. “We got to within two points and had 4-to-5 chances to take the lead. If we could have tied the game or taken the lead, we could have been in good shape,”

With the loss, Ashville fell to 13-1.

Ashville 52, Albertville 35

Ashville bounced back to defeat Albertville 52-35. Beason called it the best game of the season for the Lady Bulldogs.

“I was proud of the way we bounced back,” Beason said. “We played as a team.”

Ashville was on top 15-8 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 33-14 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Ashville’s lead was 46-25. They went on to win 52-35.

Three Ashville players scored in double figures and leading the way was Fuller with 16 points. After scoring only 1 point against Boaz, Tipton pumped in 12 points while Bothwell netted 10 points. Howard scored 4 points while Penland totaled 3 points. Montgomery, Brooks and O’Barr all had 2 points each while Lori Stephenson had 1 point.

Ashville 66, Alexandria 54

Trailing Alexandria at halftime, Ashville went on a 17-8 run in the third period and went on to beat the Lady Valley Cubs 66-54.

The two teams were tied 12-12 after the first quarter before Alexandria took a 36-31 halftime lead.

With the 17-8 cushion in the third quarter, Ashville was on top 48-44 and went on to win the game 66-54.

Tipton continued to improve with each game in the tournament. After scoring 1 point against Boaz and 12 points against Albertville, Tipton knocked in 24 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Fuller had a double double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 10 boards. Montgomery netted 9 points while Bothwell added 7 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Brooks had 6 points while Penland contributed 4 points. Elders and Howard scored 2 points each.

“Not only were there lessons learned in the loss to Boaz, we learned lessons throughout the entire tournament,” Beason said.

After playing Locust Fork this past Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs host Oneonta tomorrow night.
