TALLADEGA — A Pell City man who allegedly exchanged gunfire with Talladega Police just over a week ago was released from the hospital Monday morning and arrested on two counts of attempted murder.

Jason Dewayne Moreland, 38, was transferred to the county jail and remained there Monday afternoon on two $100,000 bonds. The bonds were included in warrants issued by Talladega County Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth, according to Police Chief Alan Watson.

Talladega patrol officers pulled over a white pickup truck on Roosevelt Avenue near the 275 Bypass around noon Dec. 5. Moreland, who was driving, allegedly opened fire on the officers. Two officers returned fire, one wounding Moreland in the lower right rear torso. A passenger in the truck bailed out and ran as soon as the gunfire broke out. He was later questioned by police, but does not appear to be facing any criminal charges.

Moreland, Watson said, then led officers on a high speed chase that ended with the pickup crashing a guard rail and flipping several times before landing in a creek and catching fire. The driver was removed by emergency personnel and eventually airlifted to University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, where he was treated until Monday morning.

The two officers involved in the shooting where placed on paid administrative leave pending completion of an investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. Watson said Monday that both officers were back at work.

Moreland may also have been involved in an armed robbery earlier Saturday morning in Childersburg, according to police there.

Childersburg Police Department investigator Walt Smith said at 9:53 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, a white male entered the Super 280 service station on U.S. 280 in Childersburg, produced a blue steel snub-nose revolver and robbed the cashier at gunpoint.

He escaped with an estimated $294 in cash from the register. No one was hurt in the robbery.

Attempted murder is a Class A felony punishable upon conviction by 20 to 99 years or life in prison. Robbery in the first degree is also a Class A felony.
