Alabama Power Company has opened spillway gates at its Coosa River dams to help manage rising lake levels due to heavy rains from Tropical Storm Ida, according to an Alabama Power Company press release.
Spillway gates are open at Henry, Logan Martin, Lay, Mitchell, and Jordan dams.
Two storage reservoirs, Logan Martin Lake and Weiss Lake, are expected to rise above summer pool levels.
“We have talked to the Army Corps of Engineers and they have given us a variance to bring the lake level on Logan Martin Lake above summer pool (465 feet),” said Alabama Power spokesman Brandon Glover.
Glover said individuals with property or equipment on Logan Martin Lake and Weiss Lake or near the shoreline of those two reservoirs should take appropriate precautions.
Alabama Power Company is updating its lake information at http://lakes.alabamapower.com with elevation projections for Logan Martin and Weiss Lakes.
According to the Web site Wednesday afternoon, Logan Martin Lake was just under the summer pool level of 465 feet. Officials expect Logan Martin Lake to crest Friday around an elevation of 469 feet.
Lake elevations are always subject to change, depending on conditions.
Alabama Power Company will continue to closely monitor conditions on the lakes and manage resources carefully. Individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.
