TALLADEGA — Moody picked up its first victory of the Brandon Wiley era Friday, defeating Talladega 21-0.

“It is my first win as a head coach,” Wiley said. “Any win is a great. Any time that you can go on the road in region play and get a shut out it is a testament of the defensive coaches and the kids. The entire coaching staff did a good job.

“We have not played at home. We have taken the road adversities and met them head on. We were sound in the kicking game and that changes outcome of the game and outcome of the offensive play calls when you have a threat of getting a field goal.

“Our offensive line did a great job; our senior quarter back controlled the clock in the second half with an 18-0 lead. I am very excited and very wet as my first win as a head coach. It is a great day to be a Blue Devil.”

The Blue Devils turned some early Talladega mistakes into 15 points.

“Once again we started out early shooting our self in the foot,” Talladega head coach Chris Mahand said. “When teams regardless of what their record or their status or what kind of quality team it is when you shoot your self in the foot like that it is going to be a problem. Like I said before all credit is due to Moody.

“They did what they were supposed to do when you make bonehead plays and when you have bonehead turnovers. They did what they were supposed to do. My hat is off to Moody we definitely have to work hard. It is going to be a year of hard work and determination, but you have to get the best guys on the field that can make the plays that we need made. ”

Turnovers hurt Talladega early in the football game. On the Tigers’ third play of the game the snap sailed over quarterback Semaj Robertson’s head, and Moody’s Perry Best picked up the fumble and ran it in for a 10-yard touchdown. Richard Spiker’s PAT was good to make 7-0 with 10:51 left in the first quarter.

On the Tigers’ (0-2, 0-1) ensuing drive running back Travoris Wallace fumbled the hand off and Moody’s Adam Buckner recovered the fumble at the Talladega 40 yard line.

The Blue Devils (1-1, 1-0) turned to their workhorse Heath Mcguff on their next drive. Mcguff accounted for all 40 of the Blue Devils’ yards including a four-yard touchdown run to give the Moody a 13-0 lead.

“Heath Mcguff is a great zone player,” Wiley said. “Probably our best unit is our offensive line, so they created the wholes for him. He is a dasher, he has great vision and he lets the play develop. Heath is a sophomore so we got him for a couple more years.”

The Blue Devils offense opened the second quarter with 12-play drive that ended in a 36-yard field goal by Spiker to give Moody a 16-0 lead with 5:37 left in the second quarter.

The Tigers’ third turnover of the first half came right before halftime. Backed up to their own three-yard line the center snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety to give the Blue Devils an 18-0 lead going into halftime.

Moody milked the clock in the third quarter as they put together 16-play drive that ate up over seven minutes and resulted in a Spiker 27-yard field goal to give Moody a 21-0 lead with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils gained 236 total yards of offense. Mcguff led the Blue Devils ground attack with 115 yards and touchdown.

Moody will be in action Friday at home against Chelsea. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
