Moody defeated Chelsea 19-14 to remain perfect in region play at 2-0.
Chelsea opened the scoring after Moody attempted to punt but a bad snap resulted in the ball being downed at the Moody 30 at 4:56 in the first quarter. Two plays later, Jake Ganus scored on a 25-yard run and Chelsea led 7-0 after the PAT by Jake Campbell.
The Moody defense came up with a huge play in the second quarter as they held the Hornets on fourth down and 1 from the Blue Devil 31.
Moody then drove 69 yards to score as quarterback Josh Owen scampered 17 yards for the touchdown. The key play in the drive was an Owen pass to Brandon Hicks that covered 49 yards. The PAT was no good and the score was 7-6 at intermission.
Moody took the second half kickoff and drove 78 yards in 17 plays with Hicks scoring from 10 yards out making the score 12-7 with 5:19 left in the 3rd quarter. The two-point conversion failed.
The Moody defense held Chelsea to five plays in the third quarter.
With 9:52 remaining in the game, Corey Payne made a spectacular touchdown catch by taking the deflected pass from the back of a Chelsea defender and turning it into a 35-yard score Owen. Blake Spiker added the PAT and Moody lead 19-7.
Moody was penalized for excessive celebration after the touchdown and kicked from the 25-yard line. Chelsea returned the kick to the Moody 47. Five plays later, Chelsea scored on a 20-yard pass from John Lawley to Michael Graben. Campbell converted the PAT and with 8:42 left in the game, Moody’s lead had been trimmed to 19-14.
Moody took the ensuing kickoff and after two first downs, had to punt with 5:50 left in the game.
Chelsea moved the ball to the Moody 39. At that point, Mert Ray, Chad Slade, Connor Howell, and Brandon Hicks led the defensive charge and the Hornets turned the ball over on downs to give Wiley his second win as the Moody Blue Devil head coach.
For Moody, Heath McGuff had 15 carries for 74 yards. Hicks had 8 carries for 47 yards and 3 receptions for 60 yards. Owen had 19 carries for 87 yards and was 10-for-19 with 1 interception and 141 yards passing.
Moody plays its first home game tomorrow against Briarwood Christian.
