Another Ragland council member has resigned due to heath reasons.

At Monday’s meeting, the council accepted the resignation of Richard W. Haynes, who was elected last November to serve the citizens of District 1.

In a letter sent to Mayor Lanis White dated Sept. 9, Haynes said, “Due to personal reasons and health related concerns, I am tendering my resignation from the position of Ragland Town Council Member, District 1. Please accept this letter as official notice of my resignation, effective immediately. I am honored to have served my community to the best of my ability. Thank you and the council for your support and understanding in this matter.”

Former councilwoman Gaylon Brown resigned five months ago due to health concerns.

After the council accepted Haynes’ resignation, White said if anyone is interested in filling this position in District 1 could send in a letter of intent to town hall.

“The council will vote, hopefully at the next council meeting to fill this position,” White said. “I do not think it is good to let these districts go unrepresented very long. Hopefully, we will have someone who is interested and he can vote on it at the October meeting.”

In another matter, Ragland High School Principal Jeff Hardy told the council he was in need of a resource officer.

“I thank this mayor and council for everything you do for this town,” Hardy said. “I appreciate the job the Ragland Police Department and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department does for us. We can get this resource officer through a grant and in the past, we have had the opportunity to get this grant. With your signature, this could happen.

“I’m asking you if you would consider locating this grant and signing off on it. When this resource officer is not working at the school, he would be working for you through the police department. We need a resource officer and I personally would appreciate it.”

In other business, the council;

• Has extended the boundary to Popes Chapel Road concerning who can bring garbage to the dump.

• Approved a motion to take bids on property located behind the print shop. The property has been surveyed and the council is ready to advertise and start the bidding process. The last day to take bids on the property will be Oct. 9, at 4:15 p.m.
