Springville did not lose a single game as they defeated St. Clair County High and Ashville to get to the title match. They then defeated Ashville to win the crown.
Springville wins varsity title
In the first match, Moody defeated Ragland 25-12, 25-19. Angela Duke had 11 assists to lead Moody. Alyson Tipton added 5 kills.
Springville then defeated SCCHS 25-9, 25-11. Leading the Lady Saints was Tabitha Oakes with 1 block and Emily Elliott and Brooke Washington with 2 kills each. Allison Layton had 3 assists.
In the next match,, Ashville beat Moody 20-25, 25-11, 15-5.
In that match, Kristen O’Barr led Ashville with 19 kills. Lori Stephenson had 4 kills while Amanda McDaniel had 9 digs. Destiny Montgomery had 7 digs while Jacie Tipton had 27 assists.
Moody was led by Ashley Epperson with 6 digs while Duke had 6 assists.
In the first elimination game, SCCHS defeated Ragland 13-25, 25-17, 15-11. Leading the Lady Saints was Elliott with 12 kills and 3 blocks. Morgan Chapin had 2 kills while Oakes had 5 kills and 3 blocks. Allison Layton had 15 assists.
In the two matches they played, Ragland was led by Madison Oliver with 11 hits and 1 tip. Lauren Wright had 4 tips while Reagan Campbell had 2 hits, 1 dig and 1 block. Leah Byers had 1 tip and 1 block while Heather Daffron had 1 hit.
In a battle of unbeatens in the tournament, Springville handled the Lady Bulldogs 25-19, 25-13.
Leading Ashville was Tipton with 10 assists and O’Barr with 8 kills. Stephenson added 2 kills.
The Lady Blue Devils eliminated the Lady Saints 18-25, 25-13, 16-14. Brooke Anderson had 6 kills for Moody while Duke had 11 assists. Epperson had 5 digs.
Leading SCCHS was Elliott with 13 kills followed by 12 assists from Layton. Oakes had 5 kills while Chapin had 2 kills.
Ashville then eliminated Moody 25-14, 25-18. Leading Ashville was McDaniel with 10 digs. Ebonie Brooks had 8 kills and 4 blocks while Stephenson had 6 kills. Tipton added 19 assists while O’Barr had 5 kills.
With the loss, Moody finished third in the tournament.
“Overall, we played okay, but many times we beat ourselves by making mistakes,” said Moody head coach Ralph Greaux.
Moody’s record stands at 16-7.
In the championship match, Springville upended Ashville 25-15, 25-19 to win the crown.
For the tournament, Springville was led by Shelby Woods with 7 blocks, 14 digs and 29 kills. Hope Rayburn had 3 aces, 4 blocks, 21 digs, 8 kills and 30 assists while Savanna Hennings had 7 aces and 12 digs. Dixie Rhodes had 6 blocks, 10 digs and 11 kills while Audrey House had 2 aces, 8 blocks, 6 digs, 10 assists and 4 kills. Danyelle Martin finished the day with 16 blocks and 5 kills while McKinley Tribble had 10 blocks.
Leading Ashville was O’Barr with 5 kills. Brooks had 3 kills and 2 blocks while Tipton had 7 assists. McDaniel had 4 digs.
Springville coach Warren House said his team played extremely well winning in straight games, not losing a single game.
“The key to the matches was the great passing by the team,” House said. “The passing led to a lot of great opportunities hitting for the team.”
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Madison Oliver from Ragland; Emily Elliott and Tabitha Oakes from SCCHS; Ashley Epperson and Angela Duke from Moody; Stormy Penland, Taylor Coffee and Amanda McDaniel from Ashville; and Dixie Rhodes, Savanna Hennings and Hope Rayburn from Springville.
The MVP of the tournament was Springville’s Shelby Woods.
Ashville wins Junior Varsity title
The Ashville junior varsity Lady Bulldogs won the county tournament beating Springville in the finals.
Ashville fought back from the loser’s bracket after losing to Springville in the first round.
The championship match was exciting from start to finish and one of the games was 30-28.
Ashville trailed the third and decisive game 8-13 before fighting back to win the championship.
