The Beacon at First United Methodist Church was an appropriate venue for the event because this new shelter serves as a beacon of hope for women and children who find themselves in this tragic situation.
The new shelter is for women and children in St. Clair and Blount counties, two areas that were in need of such services, giving them a place to turn for safe haven close to home rather than traveling to larger, metropolitan areas.
Two women shared their personal stories of finally making it out of tragic and dangerous situations for them and their children, and they spoke of their newfound hope about the future because they did indeed have that place to turn -- the YWCA and its shelter.
Through its programs, the YWCA not only offers them that safe haven, they help them get back on their feet, get a job, gain confidence and begin a new life with a better future.
We salute the efforts and the heart behind these programs and welcome the new shelter to St. Clair County. Because people do care, there are opportunities at a better life for these victims never thought possible before.
And that is certainly a cause worth celebrating and supporting.
