After years of coming in second and third place year after year, Ragland School Principal Jeff Hardy was thrilled to finally be the winner of the annual Chili Cook-Off that is held every year during homecoming.
There were five huge crock-pots full of different looking chili. The judges were Kevin Hathcock, Melinda Splawn and Gina Wilson from the central office of the St. Clair County Board of Education. Student judge was Brandon Hicks. They carefully smelled and tasted samples from each pot. They discussed the flavor of each, the different spices used and how one particular sample was extremely hot. As it turned out, Hardy’s chili was the one that was the hottest. When asked what special ingredients he used, Hardy said it was the fresh peppers and the good quality of ground beef.
“It’s pretty hot,” Hardy said with a smile on his face. “I’ve been wanting to win this thing ever since we started it,” Hardy said. “Now that I’ve won, everyone better look out because I’m coming back strong next year. I am now the reigning champion and I will definitely enjoy the next 365 days.”
Hardy beat out runner-up Bradley Buckner and third place winner Joanne Crowe.
