LEEDS — Christy Bartee said around 250 students tried out last fall for the Leeds Elementary School jump rope team. She and other coaches chose 42.

“We choose them based on their ability, their grades and their behavior,” she said. “These kids are well-rounded, well-behaved and just awesome to be around.”

The team of first- through fifth-graders performed last Thursday for the members of the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce, wowing them with a variety of skills to a musical routine.

Bartee said the team has performed at halftime at various college basketball arenas around central Alabama, and at Leeds Middle and Leeds High School. They will perform Saturday at halftime of the 3A state basketball championship game in Birmingham.

She said they are currently asking for funds to help them reach Atlanta in March, to perform at the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament.

“Any help would be appreciated,” she said.

Bartee said anyone interested in helping out could email her at cbartee@leedsk12.org
