The Ashville Bulldogs won the Class 3A, Area 9 Tournament Monday, beating Glencoe 44-40 in the title game.
Ashville will now host Piedmont Friday at 7 p.m. in sub-regional action.
Ashville 59, Cleveland 46
The Bulldogs assured themselves of playing at least two more games after beating Cleveland 59-46 in the area tournament opener at Glencoe.
Ashville was up 15-11 after the first quarter, but found themselves down 25-22 at halftime.
The Bulldogs regrouped and outscored the Panthers 17-4 in the third quarter to take a 39-29 lead into the fourth quarter. They went on to win 59-46.
Alex Looney led Ashville with 20 points. Ray Harris pumped in 13 points while William Johnson netted nine points. Damien Bothwell totaled seven points while Marcellus Brown and Parker Wadsworth netted five points each.
With the win, Ashville improved to 17-11.
Ashville 44, Glencoe 40
The title game went down to the wire, and when the buzzer sounded, Ashville was on top 44-40.
The Bulldogs trailed 11-8 after the first quarter, but took a 22-18 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets fought back and took a 31-30 lead headed into the fourth quarter. The battle was on for the next eight minutes, and in the end, Ashville pulled away to win by four, 44-40.
Harris and Brown led Ashville with 14 points each. Alex Looney pumped in eight points while Damien Bothwell scored seven points. Johnson finished the game with one point.
Ashville coach Anthony Rice noted that Piedmont is the team that has ended the season for the Bulldogs the past two years.
