Ashville girls take area

The Ashville Lady Bulldogs won the Class 3A, Area 9 Tournament Monday, beating Glencoe in the championship game.
 
It gave Ashville two-out-of-three wins against Glencoe for the season.
 
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Cleveland to get a shot at Glencoe in the finals.
 
Ashville is now 26-3 on the season, and ranked eighth in the state. They host White Plains Thursday at 7 p.m. in sub-regional action.
 
Ashville 54, Cleveland 26
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a fast start, and never looked back in the 54-26 win over Cleveland.
 
Ashville led 25-6 after the first quarter, and the rout was on. By halftime, the Lady Bulldogs were up 38-17.
 
By the end of the third quarter, Ashville was ahead 52-21, and they went on to win with ease 54-26.
 
Leading Ashville was Ankia Bothwell with a double-double as she pumped in 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Autumn Swearengin added 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Nikki Moss scored 14 points and had six steals. Lakeivia Looney netted four points while Chatara Stoudmire 2 and Hannah Ashley had two points each. Mollie Huff had one point, but grabbed six rebounds.
 
“It’s great to qualify for the state playoffs,” Ashville coach Dale Beason said. “It guarantees us two more games, and the girls were wanting to get that done.”
 
Ashville 46, Glencoe 32
Ashville’s defense stifled the Glencoe offense, especially in the second half, and went on to win the title game 46-32.
 
The Lady Bulldogs were up 11-7 after the first quarter and 33-28 at halftime.
 
The Lady Yellow Jackets managed only to make only six shots the entire second half, scoring seven points in each of the two quarters. Ashville scored 24 points and went on to win with ease 46-32.
 
Swearengin pumped in 12 points, had eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals to lead Ashville. Huff netted 11 points while Looney had nine points and four steals. Moss scored eight points and had four steals while Bothwell had five points, five rebounds and four steals. Stoudmire had one point.
