The Ragland Lady Purple Devils blew past their two opponents in the Class 1A, Area 12 Tournament that was played last week at Ragland.
Ragland’s girls easily got past Faith Christian 69-40 on Thursday, and then took it to Jacksonville Christian 64-39 in the tournament finals that was played Saturday.
Ragland, 22-7 overall, and ranked seventh in the state in Class 1A, will host Woodville in the sub-regionals Thursday at 6 p.m.
Ragland 69, Faith Christian 40
Kailey Echols pumped in 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Ragland to the 69-40 victory over Faith Christian. Echols hit 9-of-14 shots from the field.
Ragland was up 13-6 after the first quarter, and stretched its lead to 23-13 at the half.
Belle McKinney started slow as she missed four-of-her-first-five shots, but in the second half, she hit six-of-eight, and finished the game with 16 points. She grabbed eight rebounds.
One other Ragland player scored in double figures and that was Kia Lindsay with 12 points.
Ragland lit up the scoreboard in the second half scoring 46 points to make the final score 69-40.
Other scorers for Ragland were Callie Kay with five points, Kerston Looney and Bailey Petitt with four points each, Carley Echols and Payton Bearden with two points each, and Abreka Carson and Leah Byers with one point each.
Ragland 64, JCA 39
Sometimes coaches know just the right time to call a timeout.
In the championship game against JCA, Ragland coach Rush Rutledge called a timeout with 4:29 remaining in the first quarter and the Lady Purple Devils down 6-2.
Once the two teams returned to the court, Ragland finished the first quarter on a 15-0 run to take a 17-6 lead. They never looked back on their way to a 64-39 victory.
As a matter of fact, Ragland opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run. Ragland had scored 24 straight points to open up a 26-6 lead.
By halftime, the score was 38-18.
With the huge lead in hand, Ragland outscored JCA 26-21 in the second half to make the final score 64-39.
Echols pumped in 24 points to lead Ragland. McKinney added 13 points while Lindsay added 10 points. Kay totaled eight points while Byers chipped in seven points. Looney added two points.
Named to the All-Area Tournament Team from Ragland were Kailey Echols, Belle McKinney, Kia Lindsay and Leah Byers.
