Ragland senior Devane Brewster became the second student to receive a $500 scholarship from the St. Clair County Sports Hall of Fame.
Brewster was presented the scholarship at the SCCSHOF banquet held Saturday at First Baptist Church Ashville.
Brewster said it is an honor to receive the scholarship, and he is very thankful for it.
It can help out tremendously,” Brewster said.
Brewster maintains a 3.3 GPA, and plays football, basketball, baseball and tennis.
He is a member of the Beta Club, SGA, and Ecology Club.
He serves as vice-president of the senior class, vice-president of the Beta Club and was named Prom Prince. He made All-County in football and basketball. He was recently named co-defensive player of the year in St. Clair County.
Brewster has also been a mentor to young children and has coached little league basketball.
Being the oldest of four siblings, Brewster wants to be a role model to his younger brothers, and show them nothing is impossible.
Brewster is undecided on his college choice at the present moment. He knows he wants to study sports medicine or physical therapy. He also wants to play football at the next level.
Presenting Brewster with the $500 and a plaque was Hall of Fame member Jimmy Campbell.
“I think Devane is a very deserving young man,” Campbell said. “I think he is a person who needs it, and I think he will put it to good use. I think he appreciates it, and this is something we want to help out with as a student attempts to complete their education. I am honored that we are able to give this scholarship money to these deserving students. Devane is a very caring young man, and I have watched him for years. He is unselfish, and I’m very proud that we got a good kid from Ragland among all the other good kids from there.”
