A father and his daughter were killed and five other people injured in a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell identified the victims as Carlos Lopez-Cortes, 27, of Fort Payne, and his 2-month-old daughter, Alondra Lopez.

Russell said the father was pronounced dead at the scene, while the child was transported to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where she died Sunday afternoon from injuries suffered in the wreck.

Russell said the accident happened shortly after midnight Sunday at mile marker 159 on Interstate 59 in Springville.

The Alabama State Troopers Post in Birmingham reported that the driver of the 1994 GMC Suburban, Maria Ester Ponce-Mendoza, 28, of Fort Payne, was injured and transported to University Hospital in Birmingham.

Also transported to University Hospital was Jovieta Cortes, 47, of Crossville.

Four other children, between the ages of 3-12, were injured and transported to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

Russell said it appeared the 1994 GMC Suburban, which was traveling north on I-59, left the interstate and struck some trees.
