After falling to the Ashville Bulldogs in the season-opener, the Moody Blue Devils gained a measure of revenge Monday at home as they defeated the Bulldogs 59-52. The win gave the Blue Devils a record of 6-7 while the Bulldogs slipped to 10-3.
Moody 59, Ashville 52
The first quarter belonged to Moody as they jumped out to a huge lead.
Josh Daniel hit two treys to make it 11-3, and that’s when Ashville coach Anthony Rice called timeout with 3:45 remaining. A minute and a half later, with Moody leading 17-3, Rice used another timeout. By the time the first quarter came to a close, Moody was on top 21-7.
Just like the first period belonged to Moody, the second quarter was all Ashville.
They outscored Moody 20-5 to take a 27-26 lead at halftime.
The two teams were up and down the court fast-like in the third quarter with the Blue Devils taking a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
With five minutes left in the game, it was tied 47-47.
With 4:13 remaining, Ashville’s Parker Wadsworth nailed a trey to give the Bulldogs a 50-49 lead.
The next two shots were by Moody as they took a 53-50 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. They won the game 59-52.
Daniel led Moody and all scorers with 20 points. Close behind was Kajuan Crawford with 19 points. D.Q. Swann netted eight points and led the team in rebounds with 10. J.P. Archer added four points while Tevor Webster and Tevin Paul had three points each. Ashton Carter had two points.
Leading Ashville was Marcellus Brown with 13 points. Damien Bothwell added 10 points while Wadsworth and William Johnson scored seven points each. Alex Looney was held to just four points. E.J. Moss, Ray Harris and Jacob Bothwell had three points each. Jordan Looney finished the game with two points.
Moody 79, Jacksonville Christian 69
The first win of the season for Moody under new head coach Shane Traylor was a 79-69 victory over Jacksonville Christian.
The Blue Devils were up 21-14 after one quarter, 44-34 at halftime and 60-47 after three quarters.
Daniel led Moody with 32 points. Crawford pumped in 17 points while Swann added nine points. Paul netted eight points and Tevor Webster had seven points. Shawn Vowell chipped in four points while Myles Webster had two points.
Moody 49, Pell City 44
Moody defeated Pell City 49-44 recently. The Panthers were up 7-6 after the first quarter, but Moody went on a 22-8 run in the second stanza to open up a 28-15 lead.
Pell City fought back in the second half, outscoring Moody 29-21, but the comeback fell short with the Blue Devils winning the game 49-44.
Daniel led Moody with 23 points. Paul added 11 points while Swann contributed eight points. Carter had four points while Archer and Crawford had two points each.
Moody 39, Spain Park 36
The Blue Devils defeated Spain Park 39-36 last week. Daniel continued to lead the Blue Devils as he scored 17 points. Paul netted 13 points while Swann had five points and Archer had four points.
Moody 57, SCCHS 49
It appears the more games Moody plays, the better they become as they defeated St. Clair County last week.
They were up 19-8 after the first quarter; 31-23 at halftime; and 42-35 after three quarters.
Daniel led Moody with 27 points. Swann pumped in nine points while Archer added eight points. Crawford was good for six points while Tevor Webster had four points. Carter finished with two points while Paul had one point.
Moody 72, Lincoln 66
The Blue Devils then took care of Lincoln with a 72-66 victory at Lincoln.
Daniel led Moody with 32 points. Crawford had 18 points and Swann finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Vowell netted six points while Paul and Archer had two points each.
