Authorities in Moody concluded a five-month investigation into the death of a 59-year-old resident on Tuesday, when they announced the arrest of her 19-year-old grandson.
Moody Police Chief Thomas Hunt said that his department signed a warrant for Joseph Batson, of Moody, for the crime. Batson is charged with murder in the death of Mavis Batson, 59, in June. He is currently in custody at the St. Clair County jail in Pell City, with a bond of $250,000.
“The investigation was very well done,” Hunt said. “Sgt. David Scott (with the Moody PD) needs to be commended for the job he did.”
Hunt said Batson’s death was originally reported as a natural death, but under suspicious circumstances. Police requested an autopsy, which revealed that she died from suffocation.
“After an extensive investigation, Sgt. Scott obtained a confession from the suspect,” Hunt said.
St. Clair County District Attorney Richard Minor said Batson has a court appearance scheduled for Feb. 5 before District Judge Alan Furr.
