ASHVILLE — The St. Clair County Commission is continuing its discussion regarding the budget for Fiscal Year 2013.
At its work session Sept. 6, commissioners heard presentations from representatives of the Pell City Center and the Jefferson State Community College dual enrollment program. The county has contributed funds to both programs in the past.
At Tuesday’s regular meeting, the commission set a special work session for Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. in Ashville, to discuss the budget further. The commission’s regular work session will take place Sept. 20 also in Ashville.
The commission is required by law to pass the budget before the beginning of Fiscal Year 2013, in October.
“I think we are making progress,” commissioner Paul Manning said Tuesday. “I commend the commission for working hard to get this budget to the point that we can pass it.”
At the Thursday work session, commissioners instructed county administrator Kellie Long to mail letters to any party who has received funding from the county in the past, who is not included in the FY13 budget. Those interested still have time to plead their case before the budget is passed.
“I haven’t heard a request that I wouldn’t like to do,” Manning said Thursday. “But how are we going to fund all these requests?”
The county’s overall budget, according to Chief Financial Officer Donna Wood, is just over $30 million. The general fund budget is around $16 million.
