The Leeds Arts Council will feature Pinson artist Carolyn Hallmark as its Artist of the Month for September. The LAC will host an opening reception for Hallmark on Sept. 9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Leeds Theatre and Arts Center, in downtown Leeds.

Hallmark paints in various media including acrylic and mixed media, according to the LAC’s release. She paints on almost anything from canvas to clay pots to vinyl floor mats.

Her subjects vary. Although, she paints roosters, light houses, old cars and old buildings, her favorite subject is Santa Claus.

About 35 years ago, Hallmark picked up a brush and started painting as a hobby. She painted on ceramics, wood, tin, etc., and began to paint on canvas in the late 1990s. She has honed her painting skills in workshops taught by Mary Lynne Robbins, Helen Brown, Betty Howell and others.

She has also gained knowledge of art as a member and past president of the Cahawba Art Association and the Odenville Art Club. She has received several ribbons over the years, including a ribbon at the Rooster Festival in Laurence County.

The public is invited to Sunday’s reception. There is no charge for admission; however, the artwork will be available for purchase. Paintings will be on display in the gallery before and after other LAC events.

The gallery is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. In case of inclement weather, call the arts center to see if the event has been rescheduled. For more information concerning the reception or exhibit, call the arts center at 699-1892 or visit www.leedsartscouncil.org.
