LEEDS — Great Beginnings Learning Academy celebrated its new facility on Thursday.

The new building, located on U.S. 78 next to Cahaba Clay Works, is also opening a privately run, Christian-based K-6 school for the first time this fall.

“It’s all just been a very God-led thing,” said co-owner Delores Smith.

Smith said the current school has four students and one teacher, Kristy McNutt. The school will use an A Beka curriculum, which Smith called “Christ based.”

“We’re just excited to be offering this opportunity to the community,” she said.

Great Beginnings is also offering day care at its facility across the street, for ages 6 weeks to 6 years.

Smith and co-owner Tonya Kerr have been operating at The Learning Center since September 2010.

“We were working at Bethel Baptist Church (in Moody) and (Smith) said she was working on this and asked if I wanted to help,” said Kerr. “I said, ‘You can’t do that by yourself.’”

“And she’s so right,” Smith said.

The school held its first open house Thursday night. Smith said anyone interested in registering can come by the facility, call them at 205-699-1016 or visit the website, gblcleeds.com.

“We hope to give all the students a foundation of Christ,” Kerr said. “If they decide to go into the public schools later, at least they will know about Christ.

“All our teachers will be certified and accredited with the state of Alabama.”
