People in St. Clair County have gotten to know Ragland’s Eleanor Clinkscales over the past quarter of a century as she has dedicated herself to serving the less fortunate.
Whether she is working to bring groceries to hurting families, or coats for their children, or bicycles or tricycles, her spirit for helping keeps on going.
Last year she was inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for her volunteer work, and said then she wanted her “great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren to read this about me one day, and just maybe they will be inspired to do something for the poor.”
This month she is working with Nancy Crow in a mock competition to raise money to buy school supplies for children in St. Clair County through Refuge Ministries. She said that about half the children in both the St. Clair County and Pell City systems are on the free and reduced lunch programs, an indication their families could use the assistance.
When she called Pell City Mayor Bill Hereford, he knew who was calling and just asked, “How much and when?”
Now in her 80s, Clinkscales’ passion for helping others hasn’t dimmed, and she shows no intention of slowing down.
