The two ladies are at it again.
Eleanor Clinkscales and Nancy Crow are seeking your help to help needy students throughout the county as they prepare to go back to school in a couple of weeks.
Clinkscales said the needs are great. What she is talking about are the school supplies needed by the poor students of St. Clair County.
Clinkscales said she had been told the Pell City School System had 56 percent of the students on free or reduced lunches this past school year. The St. Clair County School System had 48 percent of its students on free or reduced lunches last year.
Clinkscales and Crow are having a contest to see who can raise the most money or school supplies to help these students.
“The needs are great, but I know the great people of St. Clair County will come through for me, just like they have in years past,” Clinkscales said. “I appreciate all the things individuals, churches and businesses have done before. We need your help again. We want to be able to put school supplies into every public school in this county.”
While Clinkscales is looking at area churches for help, Crow will be calling on local clubs for help.
“Clubs like the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Civitan Club, and Garden Club,” Crow said. “I want to try and get any civic organization to donate to this worthy cause.”
Clinkscales said a certain mayor (Bill Hereford) found out she was calling and he answered the phone by saying, “How much and when?”
“We will take money from any individual,” Crow said. “We just want to help the children of the St. Clair County School System and Pell City School System.”
Listed are the items Clinkscales and Crow need to help students this year.
• 1,000 packs of wide rule paper.
• 1,000 pocket folders – all colors.
• 1,000 boxes of 24-count crayons.
• 1,000 glue sticks.
• 100 pair of blunt tip fiskar scissors.
• 200 pink block erasers.
• 500 black or blue pens.
• 500 #2 pencils.
• 300 one-subject notebooks.
• 50 five-subject notebooks.
• 60 two-inch binders.
• 60 one and a half inch binders.
• 80 ABC primary tablets.
• As many hand sanitizers as possible.
Clinkscales said they would like to put four clear or mesh backpacks in each school, maybe more at Steele Jr. High School since it houses students grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
“School starts Aug. 20,” Clinkscales said. “Pickup date for all these school supplies is Aug. 15. We will pack these supplies on Aug. 16, and place them in all the schools Aug. 16-17.”
Clinkscales noted that the Refuge Ministries bank balance stands at $13.84.
“We need your help,” she said. “Donations can be made payable to Refuge Ministries. I will use these donations to buy pencil boxes, colored pencils, construction paper, pencil sharpeners, etc.”
