Few people can fathom the pain of losing a child. Fewer still could find a way to turn that pain into something that benefits other children.

But that is precisely what the family of Ian Harper has done and continues to do. Harper, the first state champion wrestler from St. Clair County High, tragically died in a car accident in 2007. Five years later, a memorial motorcycle ride continues to keep his name alive in the hopes of helping other wrestlers, and this year’s ride fell on what would have been his 26th birthday

The ride benefits the Ian Harper Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides aid to deserving students from the county who also participate in wrestling. Ian’s parents established the fund following his passing.

Rhonda Harper, Ian’s mother, says it is very difficult to talk about her son without crying. Thanks in part to her efforts, and the efforts of so many around the county, the name has transformed from a tragedy, into a triumph.
