If this is late May, then that can only mean it is time for the citizens of Ragland to celebrate a state championship.

The Ragland Lady Purple Devil softball team has made this a ritual the past three years. The 2012 edition put a little extra drama into it, by fighting its way out of the elimination bracket to claim the crown.

Come to think of it, the 2011-2012 sports season has been a pretty good one for the folks in Ragland, in general. The Purple Devils advanced to the state semifinals in football, made the playoffs in boys and girls basketball, and did the same in baseball, as well.

The softball team, however, continues to set the pace for the rest of the program. Ragland was beset by injuries for much of the season, finished second at its regional tournament – qualifying for state – and handled its business like champions in Montgomery.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what champions do. Congratulations to coach Jonathan Nix, the Lady Purple Devils and the rest of the community.

You earned it.
