“Why the free phones?”

Not really a question when put like it was in the St. Clair Times, Thursday, May 3 (Letters). Nothing is for nothing they say, and in this particular nobody got anything for free.

Forget that this is a health care problem when it comes to getting help when you need it, or that just being in touch can relieve the stress that comes in social alienation for the elderly.

Phones and the future of the telephone service were described in the “Weekly Weeder” 1968 with the first satellites sent up into obit for communication for the world.

The promise was that phones in the future would be free.

They’re not exactly free but that day has come … and Mr. Ben Hestley will eat his words one day for the propaganda he spills out.

When anyone works a lifetime and pays his dues there comes retirement, if all goes well.

When you are cut as much money a week as I was while working for Aerospace — $368 a week in 1973, for some benefits that might be bartered off by the next Republican in office — then we can feel petty lucky to have made it this far.

My advice is to get your new phone if you qualify, and whatever else that this world has to offer you.

Sorry, but $50,000 won’t raise a family of eight — not well in this day and age. I would sign up if I where you and provide what is important.

Try living on 1/5 of what you suggest it takes, since it seems so much to you?
