May is Foster Parent Appreciation Month.

Foster parents are often the most underappreciated group of parents in the work they perform. Their job is a 24/7 work week. We take in children any time of day or night, 99 percent of the time with only the clothing on their back.

We try to “re-parent” and repair damages that occurred to the children while they were in abusive homes, drug homes or just abandoned. We take them to doctor appointments, dentist appointments, school, after-school sports and church — basically they become our extended family . We are the teachers for what a loving parent does for a child.

We clothe them, put new shoes on them, take them to barber and beauty shops, all on a shoestring budget; we are showing and giving them the kind of love needed to thrive and become a healthy person.

Anyone wishing to become a foster parent, please contact your local DHR and help with the needs of the children in our county. The foster parents of St. Clair Co. have a support group that provides ongoing training, a food bank and many donations, which are passed along to the foster parents to aid with the care of your children.

Contact number for the support group is 205-594-5268 or 338-4473.

Please remember the St. Clair Co. Foster Parents during the month of May. The St. Clair Co. Foster/Adoptive Parent Assoc can be reached at 256-490-0907.
