St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Joe Sweatt said the investigation into the shooting continues. Sweatt identified the victim as Kimberly Brogdon, 34, of 461 Brogdon Road.
He said the incident happened at the residence about 8:20 p.m.
“Her common law husband, Nicholas Swindall, 30, was attempting to clean a handgun when it went off,” Sweatt said. “The bullet went through an interior wall and struck the woman in the side.
“She was sitting in the den and he was at the kitchen table, along with her dad. They all live there together. She was about 10 feet away from her husband.”
Sweatt said the couple has two other children together.
A Steele paramedic said the woman was taken to the Steele ball field by ambulance from the Attalla station, where she was then taken to University Hospital by helicopter. The paramedic rode in the back of the ambulance with the woman and said she never lost consciousness.
Although UAB officials said they did not have a patient by the name of Kimberly Brogdon listed, Sweatt said that is where she is and that she had surgery Thursday. Her condition is not known at this time.
Sweatt said no arrests have been made, but because the baby died, there is the possibility that this case could be presented to a St. Clair County Northern division grand jury in the future.
Also helping at the scene was the Steele Police Department and the Steele Fire and Rescue.
