Our hats are off to the members and sponsors of the St. Clair County Sports Hall of Fame who just inducted their eighth class of honorees and presented their first scholarship.

While the group has no permanent home, save for its website, the selection committee works each year to honor a group of people that have made an impact on sports in the county.

Athletic competition helps develop character and define the benefits of discipline, preparation and goal-setting in ways that can benefit the participants and their fans throughout their lifetimes. School sports also help set the tone for the school year and provide rallying points for the entire student body.

It’s a win-win situation, and recognition of outstanding men and women in the sports world is a worthy community undertaking.

This year’s honorees are named on other pages in this week’s paper.

Board members of the group are founder and president Larry Bothwell, vice-president Jimmy Campbell, treasurer Neal Elders, secretary Brenda Riddle, Randy Farmer, our own Gary Hanner, Arnold Keith. Austin “Rookie” Smith, Earnest Bagley, Kim Harbuck and Bettye Bothwell.

Thanks for the work you do in promoting the ideals of sportsmanship in St. Clair County.
