The Frozen Feet 5K and one mile Santa Dash are held at Pell City’s Lakeside Park, just off of Alabama 34, adjacent to the Pell City Civic Center. The 5K race is slated for 9 a.m., and the one-mile fun run is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Dec. 17.
Participants can register from 7:30-8:45 a.m. on race day. Runners can also register and pick up their race packets on the Friday before the race, from 5-7 p.m., at the Pell City High School Band Hall.
Registration fee for the 5K race is $20, and $15 for the Santa Dash.
All proceeds from the race go to the Pell City High School Band Boosters and the Pell City High School Winter Guard, which is sponsoring the event.
Race Director and former Pell City High School band member Matthew Brick is the organizer for the annual event. The “best Christmas themed 5K around,” has grown each year, and organizers are expecting an even bigger crowd this year.
Brick, 22, is currently a student at Jacksonville State University, where he is majoring in physical education. He is also a member of the Gamecocks cross-country team. He said last year’s event raised about $1,000.
Living up to its name, last year’s race began with a little flurry of sleet, and yes, there were a few cold feet, but that was before the start of the race.
This year’s participants will also have an opportunity to meet one of the Alabama Crimson Tide’s great football players.
Former University of Alabama running back Bobby Humphrey will sign autographs from 8:15-9 a.m., at the park.
There are awards for 15 different age groups and trophies for the top three male and female finishers. Overall winners are not eligible for age group awards.
The overall male and female will break through wrapping paper at the finish line, and the course will have Christmas music playing and decorations.
Door prizes and snacks are available to participants.
Mark Temple holds the 5K course record with a time of 16 minutes, 21 seconds. Ryan Green has the fastest time in the female division, finishing the course last year at 20 minutes, 42 seconds.
