Details from a Saturday night shooting in Ashville that left one person dead were still unclear Monday, according to city and county law enforcement.

St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles said county investigators are still looking into the death of Curtis Phillips Jr., a 19-year-old male from Ashville. County Coroner Dennis Russell said Phillips was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at about 11:06 p.m. on Peaceful Valley Road in Ashville. At press time, Phillips’ body was undergoing an autopsy at the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville.

Ashville police said the incident was called in at around 10:50 p.m. Saturday. Surles said a suspect in the shooting has already turned himself in and made himself available for questioning, but no one is in custody.

Sgt. Wendy Long of the Ashville Police Department classified the incident as “a shooting investigation.”

“Right now it’s still under investigation, and will more than likely go to grand jury,” she said.
