Gov. Robert Bentley is close to appointing a new district judge for St. Clair County, a spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday, but she declined to say who the candidates are.

Jennifer Ardis, press secretary for Gov. Robert Bentley, said six candidates had been interviewed for the position as of Tuesday afternoon, and she said the governor expects to make the appointment soon.

However, when asked who is being considered for the post, Ardis refused to divulge the names.

“We do not have the consent of the applicants to release their names,” she said.

An attorney for the Alabama Press Association said, “We have found no legal authority that would prevent the release of the list of candidates considered for judicial appointment.”

The new district judge will replace former district judge Phil Seay, who filled a vacant circuit judge position earlier this month.

Ardis said the new district judge will have to run for office in the 2012 elections.
