Preparations are underway for the Second Annual Riverside Volunteer Fire Department Chili Cook-off.

“We have submitted our application to the International Chili Society and should be put on their calendar probably this week,” said Kathrine Lambert, president of the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

The Second Annual Riverside Volunteer Fire Department Chili Cook-off is Aug. 27. The chili cook-off location has changed, and will be located behind City Hall in the Riverside Storm Shelter parking lot area.

“We decided to move the chili cook-off to behind City Hall because that will give us an area with the playground and shade,” Lambert said. “We will announce the times and further details after we get confirmation back from the International Chili Society.”

Lambert said last year’s chili cook-off was a regional event, with the winner advancing on to the national competition.

“We had people travel from other states to compete in last year’s chili cook-off,” she said. “This year’s chili cook-off may also be a regional event, but we won’t know until we hear back from the International Chili Society.”

Lambert said the chili cook-off is open to the public, however participants must register through the International Chili Society.

“We are also going to have the Riverside interdepartmental chili cook-off with a fan vote for the winner,” she said.

Lambert said there are plans for live music, and the auxiliary will sell hotdogs, chips and drinks as a fundraiser.

The Second Annual Riverside Volunteer Fire Department Charity Fishing Tournament is also Aug. 27. The fishing tournament will begin at daylight with weigh-in at 2 p.m. at Riverside Landing.

“The entry fee is $100, and there is a $1,000 guaranteed first prize for the tournament,” said Adam Manning, captain with the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department. “And we will probably have door prizes and other prizes as well.”
