“It’s a tremendously important position,” said Assistant Superintendent Michael Barber. “We hope anyone with any interest would seek the opportunity to serve by 4:30 p.m., today.”
Interested candidates must submit a biography/resume and a short statement saying why they would like to serve on the board. The items must be at the board office, 1000 Bruce Etheridge Drive, Suite 201, by 4:30 p.m. today.
The District 4 board seat has remained open since May 6, after the late board member Mike Price died unexpectedly in Tuscaloosa.
The board only has one month to fill the position and must have a District 4 representative in place by June 6, or the state superintendent is responsible for filling the position.
Superintendent Dr. Bobby Hathcock said he was certain the board would fill the position before the June 6 deadline.
“It’s a great thing to serve on the board, but it takes commitment,” Hathcock said. “That’s the kind of people we want, people with commitment.”
He said as of Thursday the board office has received one application.
Hathcock said the board could vote on a new board member at its special called meeting slated for 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 31.
“I would encourage anyone interested in serving on the board to apply,” said Norman Wilder, chairman of the board. “It’s an important position because it’s dealing with our future…You’re not only dealing with the future of the Pell City school system, but with the future leaders of our community, state and possibly our country.”
