St. Clair County is becoming a force in the world of competitive archery. Schools from three cities — Ashville, Pell City and Moody — will have teams competing in the National Archery Tournament next month in Louisville, Ky.

AMS will be the team to beat in Louisville. The returning two-time national champs are looking for their third straight title.

As AMS defends its team championship, a veteran of the team will be looking for her second national title. Stephanie Whisenant, now a sophomore at AHS, is the reigning world champion in her age division. She repeated this year as the high school state champion.

Archery has changed the sports picture in St. Clair County in a big way in a short time. It has given young athletes another avenue of expression, and they have brought positive national and even world attention to their hometowns.

We are proud of all the young archers of St. Clair County. Best of luck at nationals.
