Stedman Poe is an outstanding athlete at St. Clair County High School. Just last week, he won the javelin throw at the St. Clair County Track Meet, and he also excels in football. But his prowess on the field was but one of the factors in his being named the area and regional winner of the Bryant-Jordan Achievement Scholarship.

Poe also excels at academics. He maintains a 3.96 grade point average and is fourth in his class. He has been accepted to the University of Alabama, where he plans to study to be a registered nurse.

These are the things that Poe says he wants to define his life — not that he lost his father when he was 5 or that he found out when he was 14 that he had a debilitating kidney disease.

“I do not want my friends to have sympathy for me,” Poe said. “I do not want to be defined for that in my life.”
