A two-vehicle accident took two lives Thursday afternoon on U.S. 231.

In a printed release, Alabama State Troopers confirmed the deaths of 26-year-old Stephanie Hammonds, of Ashville, and 32-year-old Tyrone Turner, on Friday. St. Clair County coroner Dennis Russell pronounced both dead at the scene, and said the cause of death was blunt force trauma. Thirty-three-year-old Lee Turner, of Pell City, was also in the car with the group and was transported from the scene.

The report states that the accident occurred around 2:55 p.m. Thursday, near Family Lane. The two fatally injured victims were traveling in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, which collided head-on with a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer. Virginia Wright, 63, and Frank Alverson, 70, were both in the Blazer and were transported to UAB.

As of press time, the conditions of Wright, Alverson and Lee Turner were unknown.

The accident remains under investigation, and while it is not yet known whether weather was a factor in the accident, the state troopers have urged caution.

"Motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution and avoid travel if possible," said Steven Smith, Public Information Officer for the Alabama Highway Patrol. "The state is still experiencing icing on the roadways throughout most of central and north Alabama."
