One person was transported Wednesday from the scene of an accident that caused Interstate 59 traffic to slow to a crawl through St. Clair County.

The crash involved a van and an 18-wheeler transporting gasoline, according to the Argo Fire and Rescue service. The truck was mostly empty.

Corporal Steven Smith, the Public Information Officer for the Alabama State Troopers office, said the accident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. when the van hit a patch of ice and skidded into a retaining wall.

“(The van) came back (into the road) and hit the 18-wheeler, which hit the outside retaining wall,” Smith said.

One person was transported from the scene with non-life threatening injuries. The accident did stop traffic on the interstate, but it was open by the middle of the afternoon.
