Ranked second in the state in Class 3A, the Leeds Green Wave softball team improved to 28-8 on the season after beating Ashville, St. Clair County, Homewood and Walker County recently. They were leading Shelby County 4-1 in the third inning Saturday but the game was called due to rain.Leeds 3, Ashville 1
The Green Wave girls returned home to ‘their’ field and beat the Ashville Lady Bulldogs 3-1 on senior night.
After a tornado destroyed the Leeds softball field earlier in the season, the girls returned last Thursday and posted a win.
After Ashville took an early 1-0 lead, the Green Wave scored all three runs in the fourth inning.
Kayla Blanchard was 2-for-3 while Brittany Mitchell had two hits including a RBI double.
Blanchard was also the winning pitcher and improved to 11-4 on the season. She gave up one run on three hits, walked three and struck out six.
Brooke Swiney took the loss for Ashville.
Leeds 5, SCCHS 0
Laci Driggers had a two-run home run and Lauren Green drove in two runs as Leeds shut out SCCHS 5-0. Driggers (13-4) was also the winning pitcher as she tossed a six inning three-hitter. She walked one and struck out nine.
Blanchard was 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Leeds 2, Homewood 0
The winning continued as Leeds shut out Homewood 2-0. Blanchard (12-4) gave up six hits over seven innings and struck out five.
Ryan Ashley provided all the offensive power as she hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The blast scored Shelby Goff who had reached on a single. Ashley finished the game 2-for-3 as did Blanchard.
Leeds 12, Walker County 4
Shea Driggers was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and one home run and drove in four runs as the Green Wave defeated Walker County 12-4. Ashley came through with three hits with a double and one RBI while Laci Driggers picked up her 14th win of the season. Driggers went six innings and gave up seven hits, walked five and struck out seven.
