Ranked second in the state in Class 3A, the Leeds Green Wave softball team improved to 28-8 on the season after beating Ashville, St. Clair County, Homewood and Walker County recently. They were leading Shelby County 4-1 in the third inning Saturday but the game was called due to rain.

Leeds 3, Ashville 1

The Green Wave girls returned home to ‘their’ field and beat the Ashville Lady Bulldogs 3-1 on senior night.

After a tornado destroyed the Leeds softball field earlier in the season, the girls returned last Thursday and posted a win.

After Ashville took an early 1-0 lead, the Green Wave scored all three runs in the fourth inning.

Kayla Blanchard was 2-for-3 while Brittany Mitchell had two hits including a RBI double.

Blanchard was also the winning pitcher and improved to 11-4 on the season. She gave up one run on three hits, walked three and struck out six.

Brooke Swiney took the loss for Ashville.

Leeds 5, SCCHS 0

Laci Driggers had a two-run home run and Lauren Green drove in two runs as Leeds shut out SCCHS 5-0. Driggers (13-4) was also the winning pitcher as she tossed a six inning three-hitter. She walked one and struck out nine.

Blanchard was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Leeds 2, Homewood 0

The winning continued as Leeds shut out Homewood 2-0. Blanchard (12-4) gave up six hits over seven innings and struck out five.

Ryan Ashley provided all the offensive power as she hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The blast scored Shelby Goff who had reached on a single. Ashley finished the game 2-for-3 as did Blanchard.

Leeds 12, Walker County 4

Shea Driggers was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and one home run and drove in four runs as the Green Wave defeated Walker County 12-4. Ashley came through with three hits with a double and one RBI while Laci Driggers picked up her 14th win of the season. Driggers went six innings and gave up seven hits, walked five and struck out seven.
