Headed into last Monday’s Class 6A, Area 13 Tournament, the Lady Huskies from Hewitt-Trussville were ranked 10th in the latest Class 6A polls. They have won seven out of their last eight games. You can make that eight out of nine as Hewitt-Trussville easily defeated Huffman 18-0 Monday in the opening round of the area tourney.With the win, the Lady Huskies improved to 37-10 on the season.
Hewitt-Trussville 10, Pinson Valley 0
Hayden Cook tossed a no-hitter in the 10-0 win over Pinson Valley. Kayla Kelosky had one hit but it was a bases-clearing double that got the ball rolling in the 10-0 win.
Hewitt-Trussville 8, Spain Park 0
The Lady Huskies defeated Spain Park as Jordan McCulley pitched a one-hitter to improve to 19-4 on season. Kelosky hit a two-run home run in the first inning while Emily Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double.
Hewitt-Trussville 3, Springville 2
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Huskies scored twice to pull out a 3-2 victory over Springville.
McCulley (20-4) pitched a complete game and gave up just four hits. Both runs were unearned and she struck out three.
Kelosky started the seventh inning with a single. Amanda Dailey sacrificed her to second but ended up reaching on an error. Ashleigh Sims singled to score Mary Claire Carruth who was running for Kelosky, and Jordan Reynolds had the game-winning RBI single to score Dailey.
In the sixth inning, Allie Dean had an RBI triple to score Katherine Lowe. Dean was 2-for-2 on the day.
Savanna Hennings pitched all seven innings and had 14 strikeouts. Katelyn Tribble had a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Springville fell to 24-11 while the Lady Huskies improved to 32-9. They are currently ranked 10th in the Class 6A polls.
Alexandria 3, Springville 0
Before the loss to Hewitt-Trussville, the Lady Tigers lost to the Alexandria Lady Valley Cubs 3-0. All three runs were scored by Alexandria in the top of the eighth inning.
Hennings went the distance and gave up only two hits and no earned runs while striking out 19. The Springville defense committed four errors in the game.
Lauren Beason, Haley Garrison, Tribble and Hennings each had a hit for Springville.
Hewitt-Trussville 4, Vestavia Hills 3
Although the Lady Rebels are ranked fourth in the state, Hewitt-Trussville picked up its second win over them over the weekend 4-3.
Carruth pitched a complete game giving up three runs while striking out five.
At the plate, Dean was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and Jordan Reynolds had a RBI double.
Hewitt-Trussville 4, Thompson 0
McCulley, 21-4. pitched a complete game, two-hitter, striking out three along the way as the Lady Huskies beat Thompson 4-0.
Maggie Meacham had an RBI triple while Dailey drove in two runs with a single.
Hewitt-Trussville 6, ACA 1
The Lady Huskies improved to 35-9 with a 6-1 victory over Alabama Christian Academy, the top-ranked team in Class 4A.
Cook (8-3) pitched a complete game, four-hitter with two strikeouts. Dean was 2-for-3 with a RBI double, Stephanie Needham was 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Dailey had a two-RBI double.
Hewitt-Trussville 6, Oxford 5
Just when it looked as if Oxford would upend Hewitt-Trussville, the Lady Huskies responded by scoring four runs in the final inning to edge the Yellow Jackets 6-5.
Emily Johnson drove in the winning run with a RBI single. Needham was 2-for-3 with two doubles. McCulley (22-4) got the win in relief.
Oak Mountain 3, Hewitt-Trussville 1
The 3-1 loss to Oak Mountain knocked the lady Huskies out of the Hoover Classic. Coach John Gibson said his girls were unable to get the big hit in two innings with the bases loaded.
McCulley, 22-5, took the loss. Meacham was 2-for-3 at the plate while Kelosky had an RBI single in the first inning.
Hewitt-Trussville 18, Huffman 0
In the opening round of the Area 13 Tournament Monday, the Lady Huskies had no problem with Huffman beating them 18-0.
Chloe Bunn picked up her first win of the season. Ashleigh Sims hit a two-run home run, the first of her career. The big blow was a grand slam by Jordan Reynolds. Needham was 2-for-2 with four RBIs.
With the win, Hewitt-Trussville played Shades Valley this past Tuesday with the championship game being played today.
