When Ragland’s Trent Bice was three years old, he loved going fishing with his daddy. Now, his daddy, Tim Bice, is the one wanting to go fishing with his son. Why?Because Trent, who is now 14, recently won a $15,000 bass boat after catching the biggest crappie in Alabama’s Big Crappies Hunt. He caught the biggest crappie against 1,700 other fishermen.
The fishing tournament started Feb. 15 and went until April 6. Area lake sponsors included Lake Mitchell, Lake Jordan, Lake Logan Martin, Weiss Lake and Neely Henry Lake.
Trent purchased his $5 ticket to fish in the tournament at Southside’s Buck’s Island Marina. He caught the biggest crappie at Neely Henry Lake in Ragland March 28, and it weighed 4 pounds, 2 ounces.
Since he purchased his ticket at Buck’s Island, they also gave Trent $500.
“I’m very happy,” Trent said. “I never thought I would win a boat like this. I just hope this is not some kind of dream and I wake up one day and the boat is not here.”
The father-son duo has taken the boat out on the river once but is looking for more beautiful sunny days to get on the water.
Trent is in the eighth grade at Ragland High School. He said all his friends couldn’t believe it.
Mr. Bice said he was proud of his son and that he is a good fisherman.
“He’ll be taking me fishing a lot,” Bice said. “I still have to drive the truck.”
