Purple Devils win area, host Donoho

The Ragland Purple Devils won the area championship recently and are all set to host the first round of the state playoffs that start tomorrow.

They are currently 13-7 on the season after recent wins over Parkway Christian, Jefferson Christian, Lincoln and Donoho.

Ragland 13, Parkway Christian 0

Kurt Lipscomb was 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Corey Broome had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Purple Devils to a 13-0 win.

Seth Poe was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in while Caleb Crews also had two hits and one RBI. J.T. Caldwell had one hit and drove in two runs. Wesley St. John also had two hits

Broome picked up the win going five innings and giving up three hits, five walks and striking out nine.

Ragland 11, Jefferson Christian 0

Caldwell picked up the win and Ragland scored seven runs in the first inning on its way to an 11-0 victory over Jefferson Christian.

Ragland starters only batted once before Coach Rodney Christian emptied the bench.

Ragland 5, Lincoln 3

The Purple Devils defeated Class 3A Lincoln 5-3 last Thursday.

Ragland scored all five runs in the fourth inning as the Purple Devils played station-to-station ball with timely hitting and squeeze bunts.

“It was a good win over a pretty good 3A team,” said Lipscomb. “We needed this win.”

Caldwell, Broome, Lipscomb and St. John all had run-scoring hits in that fourth inning.

Eli Honeycutt picked up the win as he tossed five innings of three-hit ball. He gave up one run, walked one and struck out six.

Lipscomb pitched two innings in relief and gave up two runs on two hits. He walked one and struck out four.

With the win, Ragland improved to 12-6 on the season.

Ragland 10, Donoho 3

This past Saturday, the Purple Devils defeated Donoho, the team they will face in the opening round of the playoffs tomorrow. Ragland scored seven runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Honeycutt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs while St. John had three hits and drove in one run. Lipscomb and Talor Petitt drove in two runs each.

Camden Higginbotham tossed a complete game and gave up three runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out one.

Ranburne 13, Ragland 6

The Purple Devils gave up six runs in the sixth inning and lost to Ranburne 13-6. Caldwell suffered the loss as he pitched into the sixth inning and gave up 10 runs on 13 hits. He walked two and struck out four. Jacob Hollingsworth worked one and one-third innings of no-hit ball.

Honeycutt had three hits and drove in three runs while Lipscomb drove in two runs with a hit. St. John had two hits and drove in one run while Bradley Barber was 2-for-3.

The Purple Devils will host Donoho in a doubleheader tomorrow. The first game starts at 5 p.m. with game two scheduled for 7 p.m.
