'Phantom' brings "Music of the Night" to SCCHS

The Phantom of the Opera will be performed at St. Clair County High School April 10-12, at 7 p.m. each night. Two of the main roles are being played by Josh Seals (Phantom) and Maegan Taylor (Christine)./Gary Hanner/St. Clair Times
Students at St. Clair County High School have been preparing for this upcoming production since the fall of 2007.

Joy Sander’s drama students at SCCHS will be performing Phantom of the Opera April 10-12, at 7 p.m. each night.

Sanders said the drama department has grown since last year’s production of the Necklace.

“The costumes and props are very colorful and unique,” sanders said. “We are renting costumes from Playhouse Costumes in Birmingham.

Students were are in the play are Maegan Taylor (Christine), Josh Seals (Erik the Phantom), Jonathon Swindle (Raoul), Kristin Garrett (Meg Giry), Lucas Elliot (Joseph Buquet), Emily Reese (Carlotta), Alisha Edwards (Armand Moncharmin), Alexis Killough (Claudette Richard), Kimberly Woods (Madame Giry), Lindsay Henderson, Kristen Ellard and Krista Aubrey as ballerinas, Jessica Pickering (Ratcatcher/Christine’s singing voice), Blake Johnson (Critic), and Terri Wilson (Singer at ball/messenger).

Dirk Kuiper dramatizes Phantom of the Opera from the novel by Gaston Leroux. The setting is 1881 at the Paris Opera.

Sanders said the Advance Technology class at SCCHS, taught by Carl Mims, is assisting with the play.

“I really do appreciate Mr. Mims and all his help,” Sanders aid. “They are taking care of all the lighting, sound and video.”

Sanders said she was very proud of all her drama students.

“They do an excellent job and work hard,” she said. “They enjoy what they do”

SCCHS senior Maegan Taylor plays the main female lead as Christine.

“This has been a wonderful experience,” said Taylor. “The cast is great. After all these practices and the fun times we‘ve had, I definitely want to continue theatre in college at the University of Alabama. I love Mrs. Sanders and she has done an exceptional job.

Josh Seals plays the role of the Phantom and said he has connected very well with his character.

“I feel like I have found myself in this character,” Seals said. “I’m very passionate about music and the Phantom is as well.”

The production will be held on the stage in the lunchroom at St. Clair County High School. Tickets for adults are $5 while tickets for students are $4.
