Our view: Thank you for making Christmas truly merry
12.22.10 - 11:08 am
Over the last few weeks, the pages of this newspaper have been filled with stories of special groups of people making heroic efforts to see that as many folks as possible have a truly merry Christmas.

Church groups, civic clubs, motorcycle clubs, and folks who just care about their neighbors are putting in time and effort and money to share the joy of the season with the less fortunate among us.

And this year, with hard economic times still affecting us all, these efforts are needed more than ever. For many, adults and children, there would be no Christmas, without the blessed work of those who are determined to brighten the holidays for as many people as possible.

Children, of course, come first for most of us. It can literally make your heart ache to think of a child whose circumstances mean there will be no tree, no presents, no traditional meal and no joy. Making the effort, whether through giving money, going shopping for a child, or delivering the goodies to the families involved rekindles the true meaning of Christmas in our hearts.

And thinking of the children reminds us of the adults who most often ask for nothing for themselves, but only for their children. Yet, they too can and should experience the joy of receiving a present. A warm coat or a new shirt can be a real treat for these parents. And we believe their hearts and souls are warmed simply by knowing that someone cares enough about them to see that they get something for Christmas as well.

To all those groups throughout St. Clair County, thank you for caring enough to help make Christmas special for our friends and neighbors who are struggling this year.
